Car industry tracker EV-Volumes, The Electric Vehicle World Sales Database, has estimated that plug-in electric passenger car sales rose from 2.5 per cent to 4.2 per cent from 2019 to 2020 in total global car sales. Out of 100 per cent, 4.2 could be viewed as an underwhelming number, specifically in regards to many of the environmental promises and goals that the car industry has set for itself. Nonetheless, all the recorded countries are increasing their EV car sales percentages.
But when you break down the EV-Volumes report, the Nordic countries’ ownership and purchase patterns of electric vehicles stand out from the fossil fuel-laden crowd. The list’s top six performing countries in Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland, and Denmark includes five Nordic countries.
Norway, much thanks to its subsidization of EV purchases introduced in 1990, have been dominating the EV charts for three decades now. 2020 was no different, with 74.8 per cent of its total passenger car sales going to plug-in models. Reducing tax, road tolls, parking, and congestion fees is a good way to encourage your car riding inhabitants to purchase electric.
