Premiering at Milan Design Week today, the virtual exhibition Swedish Design Movement – Leading the Way presents the work of leading Swedish innovators in design, architecture, and fashion. The visitor can navigate around a ”hyper-realistic” digital version of the multifunctional, 20-storey building Sara kulturhus, one of the world’s tallest timber structures, created by White Arkitekter and constructed from wood from the forests surrounding Skellefteå in northern Sweden. The exhibition features projects exhibited as material-true 3D models by 18 sustainability-driven Swedish companies working in furniture, product design, fashion, and architecture and also includes a selection of films.
When walking up the grand staircase in the digital exhibition, the visitor will see design pieces by companies including David design, Fogia, VERK, and Reform Design Lab. The latter uses large scale 3D printers along with premium recyclable materials to create a ”third disruptive way” between traditional handwork and mass production.
When continuing through the main hall, unique fashion pieces by A NEW SWEDEN, Atacac, and maxjenny! are on display. Also showcased is Swedish Stockings, challenging traditional hosiery — a petroleum-based product, harmful to the environment — describing itself as the world’s first sustainable hosiery brand. With a mission to drive change and influence the industry to become more sustainable, the company creates legwear from pre-and post-consumer nylon waste.
Also featured in Leading the Way are architectural projects by companies including Claesson Koivisto Rune Architects, Kjellander Sjöberg, Tham/Videgård, White Arkitekter, and Wingårdhs. In the cinema, visitors can delve even deeper into seven design- and sustainability-driven companies through a series of videos created by Note Design Studio and filmmaker Carl Engberg.
