Have you considered renting your garden furniture? International design company Skagerak believes that you should — also aiming to make it as convenient as possible. It enables the customer to change the furniture regularly in a more responsible way — to be certain that it’s the right fit for the garden, or to avoid the challenge of winter storage. Founded in Denmark in 1976, Skagerak became B Corp certified in 2017, when it also launched its buy-back initiative, Reclassic, buying back its used furniture, restoring it, and putting it up for sale. Global impact manager Mia Møgelgaard explains that Rent — first introduced two years ago and this spring expanded across Europe — is an important step to minimize its negative footprint.

— We want to inspire consumers to be users — to prolong the lifetime of everything they use and to put stuff into circulation. We want our furniture to last a lifetime and be passed on for a new chapter in an ongoing story. Skagerak Rent gives people the opportunity to experience the joys of our furniture without owning it. This way pieces can be rented and re-used, again and again, she says.

How does it work?

— You can rent our pieces for a minimum of three months and for as long as you want by paying a monthly fee that includes insurance. The furniture is delivered directly to you, and when you wish to end your rental period, we’ll come and pick up the furniture again.

The customers can either rent entire furniture set at a time or put together their own set from several different collections. Once the rental period ends, Skagerak offers to buy them at a reduced price, or restore and prepare them for the next family to keep the sustainable orbit rolling.

— We have also created a dedicated Care & Repair site online where we guide our customers on the best possible care and maintenance of our products with the hope to inspire people to prolong the lifetime of their products. As a globally operating company we have a responsibility to provide more responsible solutions, Møgelgaard concludes.
