Swedish design duo Carl Philip Bernadotte and Oscar Kylberg follow up previous works for the likes of Stelton, Hästens, and Georg Jensen with their own brand, together with online retailer Nordic Nest.
NJRD, or Njord [who were the Norse god of wind and waters] as it is pronounced, launches with the duo’s great fondness for Scandinavian design history. They’ve developed the first 86 products focusing on sustainable and functional design designed to stand the test of time, in everything from material choice, to colour and form.
The collection, named Shapes, includes porcelain series Lines and colourful throws in soft recycled cotton with graphic jacquard-woven patterns on both sides. Last but not least, hand-tufted wool rugs with a deep, soft pile and a graphic motif.
— NJRD has been on our minds and in the making for two years. Creating NJRD together with Nordic Nest and entering 70 markets in over 10 languages from day one is exceptional — even by today’s standards. We want everyone with a design product from NJRD to feel that they own a unique piece of Scandinavian design heritage, the duo says, continuing,
— In this first collection, everything initially revolved around rugs, and specifically the pattern Lines, which was the first thing we designed. And that is what we built further on, applying it to throws and tableware. Bringing the whole collection together was a challenge at times — but that was also part of the fascination and satisfaction. Besides the clear-cut lines, we have taken two paths in terms of color palette — one being a more stark, graphic profile in black, white, and grey, and the other — just as graphic –—but with distinct, warm, elements of color. We strive to create tactile, visual experiences, which is why the tableware has different glazes, the rugs come both woven and tufted, and the throws are a jacquard weave — with a distinct back and front side.
