Svenskt Tenn is a staple design brand in Sweden and Scandinavia, and founder Estrid Ericson’s summerhouse Tolvekarna is the place of inspiration for its core value — the idea of an ever-changing and lively home. The new Al Fresco exhibition, now live at the Svenskt Tenn flagship gallery Strandvägsgalleriet in Stockholm, aims to interpret the iconic Tolvekarna.
The summerhouse’s close proximity to nature has been a core inspiration source for the exhibition, which suits Belgian artist and designer Jean-Philippe Demeyer well. Demeyer is known for his colourful and playful design approach, which is often inspired by gardens and historic interiors. Demeyer has designed circa 30 exclusive cushions for the exhibitions, created with fabric scraps from Svenskt Tenn’s artisanal production.
— The upcycling concept is a fundamental principle in my work. The limitations that arise by only using what is at hand becomes a driving force in the creative process. Finding new uses for scrap materials gives me a sense of well being. The first time I met with Svenskt Tenn and presented my products and my technique, it became clear that sustainability is as much of a driving force for them as for me. I am therefore extra proud of this collaboration, says Jean-Philippe Demeyer.
