In the 60s, Byrdal Terenziani tells, Copenhagen was the center for Scandinavian design with its annual Cabinetmaker Exhibition, Snedkernes Efterårsudstilling.
— Now famous for the venue where highly celebrated designers as Hans J. Wegner, Poul Kjærholm, and Finn Juhl competed with their latest design, the event was also visited by a great international audience. Although Denmark has not lost its position of being in front of Nordic design, we have missed an event where people can meet and discuss the latest designs. Therefore, four major Danish design companies — Montana, Fritz Hansen, Erik Jørgensen, and Kvadrat — agreed to start a new design event in Copenhagen, eight years ago.
At the start, Byrdal Terenziani was appointed as director, and has, ever since, been at the forefront of making the event grow.
— This year, we’re bigger than ever counting more than 200 exhibitors including many embassies and foreign design companies.
What’s your key to success?
— We believe that it’s due to the effort we’ve made in connecting people. Not only designers, manufacturers, and media people, but also like-minded people interested in design, says Byrdal Terenziani. She continues:
— And it remains a curated event — we don’t allow companies who copy other’s designs. This mere notion not only means that the products show genuine creativity from its offspring, but also that the guests are met with truly original design. The vibrant city of Copenhagen plays a key role as the exhibitions are spread widely across the city. It’s a chance for the many foreigners who come each year to visit to experience the city from another perspective. The event offers a great opportunity to visit the designers’ studios, meet the designers, and join the many talks at the different venues.
— And, I didn’t mention the parties! People still use to talk about them.
Tell us more. What’s new this week?
— This year, we meet each other with a different mindset as 3daysofdesign reflects upon what months of lockdown have done to us. We know that during lockdown, people have been painting, redecorating, and refurnishing more than ever, but during the pandemic, we’ve also become aware of how much our surroundings mean to our wellbeing. So this year, we pay tribute to a conscious way of surrounding us with beauty, creativity, and things that mean something to us, says Byrdal Terenziani, continuing,
— You should come and experience 3daysofdesign for yourself. The exhibitors are challenging themselves and each other in different creative ways of presenting their latest projects. It’s great fun and pretty eye-opening to see what they come up with. And, we’re already busy preparing the next 3daysofdesign, taking place in May 2022.
