La Roche Posay’s Medical Communication Manager shares what she’s curious about in microbiome science
Julie Chamoun Bruusgaard’s lessons learned from 22 scientific publications and 25 studies with 1,500 patients during almost 15 years.

A nurse by education, Julie Chamoun Bruusgaard is now the Nordic Medical Communication Manager for La Roche-Posay. The brand has experienced a successful couple of years and just added Effaclar Duo+M to its portfolio.

— It’s built on a formula inspired by microbiome science and is developed for people with acne-prone skin, Chamoun Bruusgaard explains. Acne is a multifactorial inflammatory disease affecting pilosebaceous follicles: hyperseborrhoea (sebum hyperproduction), hyperkeratinisation (abnormal follicular keratinization), inflammation, and microbiome disbalance (proliferation of C.Acnes (Cutibacterium acnes) and Staphylococcus aureus). This product helps to act on these different factors to help and reduce acne prone skin. We’ve added a new ingredient called Phylobioma to answer a recent discovery in the microbiome ’universe’. 

— To explain the last discovery I will have to go back in time. Thanks to science we are able now to be more detailed when looking at the microbiome. If you remember in 2016 we stopped saying that P.Acnes (Propionibacterium acnes) was the predominant bacteria in acne patients but C.Acnes because we were able to look closer at it and do a genetic classification. Now we are able to look even closer. Thanks to DNA-based approaches we found out that within the C.acnes strains there are 6 different phylotypes. There is a specific Phylotype IA1 that is the most predominant in acne patients compared to healthy skin and is linked to acne severity. So in other words a specific member in the C.acnes family if you want is taking over causing an unbalanced microbiome. The idea is not anymore to kill C.Acnes, but to have an ultra-targeted approach on the phylotypes IA1. 

— To target this specific Phylotype, the concept of Effaclar Duo+M concept was inspired by the latest acne science Research related with microbiome, showing that a lack of diversity among C. acnes phylotypes with a predominance of phylotype IA1 was observed in acneic patients, in comparison with healthy patients. We go from microbiome targeting c.acnes to phylobioma targeting phylotype IA1. Phylobioma is a natural origin extract from Pomegranate which contains a vast amount of polyphenol. The fruits are dried and reduced to powder. Polyphenol molecules are then isolated. Thanks to this renovated formulation Effaclar duo + M reduces unevenness, such as pimples, marks after acne and prevents recurrence, according to our clinical study.

In 2011, academic researchers made the cartography of the skin microbiome. That same year, La Roche-Posay started increasing its focus on the area and now has 22 scientific publications and has done 25 studies with 1,500 patients. 

— In the past two years we have been renovating many of our bestselling products as a result of different learnings we have done on the microbiome. One example is when we learned that an unbalanced microbiome has an effect on the skin’s recovery and resilience ability, which we know can impact quality of life in the long term. We have added an ingredient called Tribioma to help feed the good bacteria on the skin, making sure they stay in balance. Another renovation is our moisturizer for atopy-prone skin to help balance the microbiome and reduce the staphylococcus biofilm formation, which is a problematic bacterium when it over proliferates in this skin concern group.

What are you curious about right now when it comes to the microbiome? 

— The discoveries we are doing now are observational and allowing us to dig deeper in the microbiome science, Chamoun Bruusgaard shares. More research needs to be done to learn more about the complex world that is microbiome science. I am very excited to learn more about how the microbes in us and on us communicate with each other to intercept their messages and not just cure diseases in the future but prevent them from happening. The microbiome, as one insightful scientist once said, will be treated as an organ on its own one day — I just hope I will be able to witness it.
