Yet in its early days, the entertainment company’s push into games is a part of a plan to offer more entertainment to its subscribers.

The expansion into gaming started a little bit over a year ago. The new Helsinki studio follows the acquisitions of Night School Studio, Boss Fight Entertainment, and, earlier this year, Finnish mobile gaming studio Next Games. The Finnish capital is home to almost 100 gaming startups and, according to Amir Rahimi, Netflix’s vice president of game studios, also to ”some of the best game talents in the world”.

— This will be a games studio that we build from scratch, and our second games studio in Helsinki alongside Next Games, he said. It will bring a variety of delightful and deeply engaging original games — with no ads and no in-app purchases — to our hundreds of millions of members around the world.

The streaming giant now has 32 games downloaded some 30 million times. 1.63 million people on average play the games on a daily basis, CNN Business reports, based on numbers from market research firm Apptopia. In total, Netflix currently has 220 million paying subscribers.
