The Oslo-based skincare brand focuses on delivering effective products with documented results, catering to various skin types to benefit from the active ingredients used. The just-launched Nova Collection consists of a range of three sun protection products designed to simplify daily sun protection while enhancing and nourishing the skin.

— Nova Cream features a lightweight, non-greasy formula suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and acne-prone skin. It provides broad-spectrum sun protection and minimizes the risk of breakouts that can be associated with SPF usage. The Nova BB Cream gives a natural summer glow and adjusts to the skin’s natural colour. When combined with 3–4 drops of Nova Drops, it offers additional daily sun protection. It’s a perfect blend for those seeking a lightweight coverage with added sun care benefits, says Marianne Fjørtoft, co-founder and Chief Adviser.

The mentioned Nova Drops can be mixed with any skincare product, instantly transforming it into a sunscreen.

— They also add a nourishing glow to your skin and contain a blend of recycled grapes, which offer active antioxidant effects, and kombucha with probiotic and antiseptic properties.

Nova Drops is stamped with a UVA symbol and Elixir states that mixing it with other skincare products will lower the protection for the end consumer. The company provides instructions and guidance to ensure to incorporate the products seamlessly into the skincare routine.

— While there may be some challenges in finding the right balance between mixing products and maintaining optimal sun protection, the overall combination provides a valuable addition to the skincare routine, Fjørtoft says.

Can you take us through the product development? What was the most challenging part?

— Our goal was to create a formulation where we strived to stay updated on alternative natural conservatives and active ingredients that both penetrate and protect the skin. We worked closely with our labs to develop an effective, more eco-friendly formulation.

— During the process, we conducted several months of testing to evaluate the texture, smell, and performance of the products. If any improvements were identified, we iterated and refined the formulation. We also involved different skin types in our testing to ensure compatibility across various conditions. Additionally, we performed dermatology tests in the lab. One of the main challenges we faced was finding products that suit all skin types, so we chose to use chemical sunscreen, which is non-comedogenic and suitable for acne-prone skin.

What’s your view on the future of SPF?

— The future holds promising advancements in terms of ingredients, formulation, and packaging. We anticipate the introduction of innovative ingredients that offer enhanced sun protection while addressing specific skincare needs. These ingredients may include advanced UV filters, antioxidants, and skin-nourishing components. In terms of formulation, we can expect sunscreens that are lightweight, non-greasy, and easily blendable into various skincare routines. Multi-functional formulations combining SPF with other beneficial skincare properties, such as hydration, anti-aging, or pollution protection, will become more prevalent.

— As for packaging, there will be a growing demand for more sustainable options. While plastic has been a dominant choice, packaging manufacturers must seek and adopt better alternatives. Glass packaging offers improved sustainability but might present challenges for online shipments due to its fragility.

Speaking of packaging, have you looked into using any material innovations as well?

— While we have considered using alternative packaging materials such as biobased and recycled options, we have encountered challenges related to ingredient stability, says Fjørtoft. It is essential for us to ensure that our products remain safe and effective throughout their shelf life. Balancing stability and sustainability is an ongoing challenge that we are actively addressing. In terms of future developments, we are continuously exploring new ingredients and innovative delivery systems. Our goal is to stay at the forefront of advancements in the industry.
