Dormant electric vehicles can turn into energy source through new overseas collaborations
Implemented roadmaps give a new purpose to a parked EV.

An increasing demand for electricity in Sweden and the US opens the door to a new technology involving connecting EVs to the electricity power grid. Through a joined force between the Swedish electric performance car brand Polestar, the Electric Power Research Institute, and the California Energy Commission the V2G (vehicle-to-grid) technology aims to turn electric cars into dynamic power sources.

An average car is parked 90% of the time. Instead of storing the surplus electric energy in a battery, the idea is to enable the extra capacity of energy to be transferred back to the power grid via implemented roadmaps. The V2G technology is specifically designed for the Swedish automotive industry and the state of California, and the project aims to work as a guide for future initiatives in this area.

The knowledge gained during the project will be shared with other actors in the energy industries in Sweden and across Europe. Through support and funding from the neutral platform Future Mobility, the project’s initiative is to lower the thresholds for innovative collaborations aiming for a greener mobile future.

By the project’s end, a detailed implementation roadmap will guide future initiatives in this field. Electric Power Research Institute and the California Energy Commission will also use their network to inform the US public about the project.
