The product, Olfactive Stéréophonique, is an experimental collaboration that uses speaker design theory and scent to evoke the meditative effects of ritualistic practice and enhance a listening space. Designed by Turnbull and Gorham, it’s born from the duo’s shared love of music listening as a ritualistic practice, as well their childhood experiences of Hindu temples, meditation halls, and spaces for reflection and worship. Together, they set out to design a device that would seamlessly integrate a smell and a sound system, borrowing acoustic horn loading theories from speaker design and applying them to smell diffusion. The result is a revolutionary device that doesn’t function as a speaker but can distribute a smell more efficiently, in a direct and controlled manner.
Drawing inspiration from incense used in Hindu and Buddhist temples and the evocative smell of ancient wooden structures, Turnbull and Gorham have created a scent that helps in the transition between states of consciousness. Together with your favourite music and the sound system at your home, they aim to create a multi-sensory experience in these uncertain times.
